Gum disease is one of the most common issues treated by dentists. Gum disease occurs when sugar from the foods you eat is left on your teeth.  The harmful bacteria in your mouth feed on the sugar and create acid by-products that destroy the enamel. The immune system responds to the bacteria but when it can’t clear the infection the gums become chronically inflamed and bone is destroyed. Gum disease can be prevented with good oral habits, but it can also treated with a deep-cleaning procedure called scaling and root planing.

What is Scaling and Root Planing?

Scaling and root planing are techniques to remove plaque beneath the gums. Periodontitis can cause the gums to become inflamed and pull away from the teeth, revealing spaces where plaque can become trapped near the tooth’s root. This plaque can’t be removed with normal brushing, meaning a dentist must remove it. Scaling and root planing are more in-depth than normal professional cleaning. These two techniques can clean plaque from the teeth and help the gums reattach, reducing gum disease symptoms and improving overall health.

What are the Benefits of Scaling and Root Planing?

Scaling and root planing remove the deep bacteria causing the chronic inflammation and bone loss associated with gum disease and contributing to systemic disease.  The plaques in cardiovascular disease which can rupture and cause strokes and Alzheimer’s disease are comprised of the same bacteria found in the pockets of the gums.  Removing the bacteria helps to clear the body of systemic inflammation.

What Can I Expect From Scaling and Root Planing?

=Scaling and Root Planing involves gently and methodically removing plaque and tartar from above and below the gum line.  Then a Diode laser will be used to reach even further into the pocket and eradicate bacteria that is either too deep or resistant to manual instrumentation.  The laser also stimulates the body’s natural healing factors to improve reattachment of the gums ppost-procedure  The pocket is irrigated of debris.  A re-evaluation of the procedure will be done at 6 weeks to determine efficacy or if further treatment is needed. DMD Dental will ensure you remain comfortable and informed about your treatment process, local anesthetic may be chosen.

The Scaling and Root Planing Process and Beyond

Afterward, you can expect pain and sensitivity in your teeth and gums. You may also experience tenderness, swelling, and slight bleeding. Our team will give you detailed aftercare instructions to help prevent infection and schedule a follow-up appointment to monitor your healing. The best way to ensure a good result is to return for regular cleaning appointments, brush twice daily, and floss at least once a day.
