Protecting your teeth from injury and wear is one of the best ways to prevent the need for extensive treatment in the future. We offer nightguards and mouthguards to keep your teeth healthy and help you sleep or do your favorite activities with confidence.
What is a Nightguard & Mouthguard?
Nightguards and mouthguards are custom-made trays that fit over the upper or lower teeth to protect them from damage. Nightguards specifically prevent damage from grinding your teeth while you sleep, also called sleep bruxism. Mouthguards are similar to nightguards but are developed to protect the teeth during physical activity like contact sports. Although you can acquire nightguards and mouthguards over the counter, Dr. Du Mond creates trays that specifically fit your teeth for the best balance of protection and comfort.
What are the Benefits of a Nightguard & Mouthguard?
Nightguards and mouthguards are preventive and can protect against the need for significant treatment in the future. For example, nightguards can prevent shortening of teeth and loss of enamel, as well as headaches and jaw pain associated with bruxism. Over time, sleep bruxism can even lead to cracked, worn or chipped teeth. Mouthguards can protect against serious injuries to the teeth during physical activities, like chips, cracks, and breakages.
What Can I Expect From a Nightguard & Mouthguard?
Nightguards and mouthguards require a few separate appointments. First, you’ll meet with Dr. Du Mond to discuss your needs from your nightguard or mouthguard. Our team will take an impression and create a mold of your bite. This mold will be sent to a dental lab, where a tray will be custom-made for your teeth. Once it’s ready, you’ll return to try out the tray and ensure it fits. Some quick adjustments may be made in our office. Dr. Du Mond will also check your bite to ensure it fits comfortably. Then, you can go about the rest of your day.
The Nightguard & Mouthguard Process and Beyond
Nightguards may be uncomfortable to sleep with at first, but make sure to continue using them so you adjust. It’s important to wear your nightguard every night to protect your teeth and bring it to your bi-yearly appointment for cleaning and examination. Our team will give you instructions on how to care for your nightguard or mouthguard. With the right care, these devices can last many years before needing replacement.

What are the signs that I might need a night guard?
If you often wake up with jaw pain, headaches, or notice chipped and worn-down teeth, you might be grinding or clenching your teeth at night – a condition known as bruxism. These are clear signs you could benefit from a night guard. A custom night guard will cushion and protect your teeth while you sleep, preventing further damage. Many of our Scottsdale patients also report more relaxed jaws and better sleep once they start using their night guards consistently.
What is the difference between a night guard and a sports mouthguard?
A night guard is a protective appliance worn while you sleep to prevent damage from teeth grinding or clenching. In contrast, a sports mouthguard is worn during athletic activities to shield your teeth and mouth from impact and injury. While both are types of mouthguards, they serve different purposes. At our Scottsdale dental office, we custom-design night guards for nocturnal grinding and separate high-quality mouthguards for sports, ensuring you get the right type of protection for every situation.
Are custom-fitted guards better than store-bought options?
Yes – a custom-fitted night guard or mouthguard is vastly superior to an over-the-counter version. Professional guards are tailored to your unique bite using precise molds or digital scans of your teeth, which means they fit comfortably and stay securely in place. By visiting our Scottsdale practice for a custom guard, you’re investing in premium materials and expert craftsmanship that provide maximum protection for your teeth. In contrast, boil-and-bite or one-size guards from the store often feel bulky or loose, irritate your gums and may not adequately safeguard your smile, especially for those with a high-end dental work or specific alignment needs.
How much does a custom night guard cost in Scottsdale?
In Scottsdale, a custom-made night guard generally costs a few hundred dollars, depending on the exact type and material used. While this is a higher upfront cost than a basic drugstore guard, the value is in the longevity and level of protection you receive. Our DMD Dental team uses durable, premium materials to ensure your guard lasts, and we will provide a personalized quote before treatment. Many dental insurance plans offer coverage for night guards when medically necessary (for example, to treat bruxism or TMJ issues), which can greatly offset the investment. Ultimately, a custom night guard is a wise investment in protecting your teeth and any dental restorations from costly damage.
Can a night guard help with jaw pain or TMJ issues?
Absolutely. A custom night guard is often recommended for patients with TMJ disorder or chronic jaw pain from bruxism. By providing a cushioning layer between your upper and lower teeth, the guard minimizes the stress on your jaw joints and muscles during sleep. Over time, this can significantly reduce jaw pain, headaches, and even earaches associated with TMJ tension. Our Scottsdale patients have experienced notable relief and improved comfort by wearing their night guards nightly, as it encourages the jaw to rest in a more relaxed, natural position. In short, a well-fitted night guard not only protects your teeth but also promotes a healthier, pain-free bite and a better night’s sleep.
