Crowns are an effective way to restore the appearance and function of a damaged tooth. At DMD Dental, we offer one of the most advanced crown technologies available, CEREC crowns.
What are CEREC Crowns?
CEREC stands for the chairside economical restoration of esthetic ceramics. They’re an esthetic, durable, and long-lasting crown that can be placed within the same day because they incorporate computer-assisted technology to design, create, and fabricate the restoration. CEREC crowns are made from a very strong type of ceramic material, making them more long-lasting than traditional resin options.
What are the Benefits of CEREC Crowns?
CEREC crowns are most beneficial for their natural appearance. Because they don’t have a metal core, they more closely resemble natural teeth and may even be undetectable. CEREC crowns are also ideal for their durability – the ceramic material can resist abrasion and wear, helping them last for a very long time. Finally, many patients prefer CEREC crowns because they can be completed on the same day, unlike traditional crowns which require fabrication in a dental lab.
What Can I Expect From CEREC Crowns?
CEREC crowns work similarly to 3D printing. Firstly, Dr. Du Mond will make conservative preparations to preserve your tooth structure and longevity. She will then scan your tooth. Then, a 3D model will be created using CAD/CAM technology. The computer will then mill a crown out of ceramic, a process that only takes a few minutes. Dr. Du Mond will then place the crown and ensure it fits, making small adjustments to ensure your bite remains correct. This process takes place all at the same appointment.
The CEREC Crowns Process and Beyond
To extend the life of your CEREC crown, make sure to brush your teeth twice daily and floss at least once per day. It’s also important to moderate your intake of chewy, sticky, and hard foods. Make sure to also check in with Dr. Du Mond regularly at your hygiene appointments to monitor the integrity of your crown. CEREC crowns can last 10 years with proper care.
