One way to preserve the health of a tooth experiencing bone loss from periodontal disease is by regenerating the amount of tissue in the jaw. At DMD Dental, we take a minimally invasive and regenerative approach to dentistry, preserving and regenerating natural tissue.
What is Guided Tissue Regeneration?
Guided tissue regeneration is a process of restoring lost tissue in the jawbone. It uses resorbable materials to guide the regrowth of bone and gum tissue over time, which can allow your body to regenerate itself naturally.
What are the Benefits of Guided Tissue Regeneration?
Periodontal disease can cause the jawbone and gums to break down, impairing the health of your teeth and exacerbating systemic diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. By restoring lost tissue around the tooth, you can preserve its life and avoid the need for more extensive and invasive work.
What Can I Expect From Guided Tissue Regeneration?
Guided tissue regeneration helps promote the growth of bone tissue by keeping the gums out of the way. The oral surgeon will make an incision in the gums and place a biocompatible “membrane” between the gums and the area of bone loss. Bone grafts and platelet-rich fibrin may also be incorporated. Normally, gum tissue might fill in this area because it regenerates faster than bone – however, gum tissue cannot support the teeth as bone does. This membrane allows bone tissue to regenerate over time without the interference of the gums, improving the health of your teeth and reversing the effects of periodontitis.
The Guided Tissue Regeneration Process and Beyond
The process of guided tissue regeneration can take several months to complete. During this time, your body will create new bone tissue – thus, preventing infection and removing decay-causing bacteria is important. Make sure to brush twice daily and floss at least once per day once your treatment area is healed. Dr. Du Mond will check your results regularly to ensure the bone growth is proceeding as needed.
