Although many people think of CPAP machines for sleep apnea, other devices can provide effective treatment. At DMD Dental, we can help you get restful sleep.

What is a Sleep Device?
Sleep devices are oral appliances that you wear while you sleep. Different from a nightguard, they can help reposition your jaw and tongue to prevent airway blockage. They work by pulling the lower jaw and tongue forward, keeping your anatomy from falling down onto your airway. This keeps the airway open, allowing you to breathe efficiently as you sleep.
What are the Benefits of a Sleep Device?
Getting more restful sleep is the biggest benefit of sleep devices. Better sleep can have a large overall impact on your whole-body health and day-to-day functioning. CPAP devices use air pressure to keep your airway open, which can be very effective, but they’re not attainable or ideal for everyone, making sleep devices a valuable alternative.
What Can I Expect From a Sleep Device?
Dr. Du Mond will begin by discussing your symptoms and determining whether a sleep device will be beneficial for you. She will examine your mouth and take an impression or scan of your teeth, paying special attention to your bite. A device will be fabricated, and Dr. Du Mond will help you learn how to use it, checking the fit and ensuring it won’t move out of place while sleeping.
The Sleep Device Process and Beyond
Dr. Du Mond will give you instructions on how to clean and care for your sleep device. It may take a few weeks to adjust to sleeping with your new device – it’s important to continue using it consistently. You’ll check in regularly to ensure it’s working, and Dr. Du Mond may even recommend you get a sleep test to measure your improvement. We also recommend meeting with your regular physician to ensure your health markers remain at healthy levels.
