Traditional braces can be uncomfortable for many patients. Orthodontic aligners are an alternative that allows you to achieve a straighter smile while still being able to eat and go about your day as normal.
What are Orthodontic Aligners?
Orthodontic aligners are clear, removable trays that fit over the top and bottom teeth to straighten them. Rather than wire braces, which are brackets cemented to the teeth that bring them into position with metal wires, orthodontic aligners shift the teeth into position as you change out trays for ones more closely aligned with your ideal smile.
What are the Benefits of Orthodontic Aligners?
There are many benefits of orthodontic aligners. Firstly, they are designed to be virtually invisible, giving you more confidence in your smile. Secondly, they can be removed while eating and drinking, meaning you don’t need to avoid certain foods as with traditional braces. Finally, they don’t damage your teeth or require specialized cleaning as wire braces do. For many patients, orthodontic aligners are an overall better experience than traditional braces.
What Can I Expect From Orthodontic Aligners?
Orthodontic aligners occur in stages, with each tray being designed to shift your teeth closer to their ideal position. Dr. Du Mond will take an impression of your mouth and design a treatment plan, developing a set of custom-made trays. Once you have the trays from our lab, you’ll begin wearing them. Every few months, you’ll change your trays for the next phase of your treatment until you reach the final set. It can take 1-2 years to complete this process.
The Orthodontic Aligners Process and Beyond
Special care steps are required to get the best results from your orthodontic aligner treatment. This includes rinsing and washing the aligners regularly, removing them only when you eat or drink, brushing your teeth after every meal, and avoiding staining the aligners. Dr. Du Mond will check in regularly to assess your progress and ensure your teeth are shifting as they should. Once you’ve reached your ideal smile, she may recommend wearing your trays at night in order to maintain your results.
