Dental implants are one of the longest-lasting restorative options. At DMD Dental, we can use implants to help you maintain your oral health for years to come.
What are Implants?
Dental implants are devices attached to the jawbone so that they function just like a natural tooth. They’re manufactured in three parts – the anchor, which is implanted in the bone, the rod that inserts into the anchor, and the tooth-like restoration cemented to the rod that is visible when you smile. Dr. Du Mond may recommend implants if you had a tooth extracted or have significant bone loss that affects the health of your teeth. Implants may be paired with bone grafts if your jaw doesn’t have sufficient bone tissue to support the implant.
What are the Benefits of Implants?
Implants can fill in gaps in your teeth, restoring your bite and preventing possible decay. Missing teeth can shift and create areas where bacteria can be trapped, and they can also leave gaps that cause your bite to wear unevenly. Implants are a robust and comprehensive option for restoring your smile and can even be paired with other restorative options, such as implant-anchored bridges or implant-supported dentures.
What Can I Expect From Implants?
Implants require multiple appointments. First, Dr. Du Mond will assess your mouth and check that enough bone tissue is present in the treatment area. If needed, she will place bone grafts, which may take several months to produce enough tissue. The next step is placing the anchor in the bone, which is done with local anesthetic and sedation to keep you comfortable. A healing period is required where the bone will fuse to the anchor, keeping it in place. Then, Dr. Du Mond will fabricate a restoration, such as a crown or bridge, to match your natural teeth. This will be cemented in place, and Dr. Du Mond will check the integrity of your bite.
The Implant Process and Beyond
Dental implants can last for ten years or more with proper care. Your implant should be taken care of just like your natural teeth, with twice daily brushing and flossing. Avoid things that could wear down your restoration, such as using your teeth as tools and eating hard or sticky foods. Dr. Du Mond will check your implant for wear at your regular hygiene appointments. In many cases, you may only need to replace the restoration rather than the implanted anchor or rod.
