The jawbone is intrinsic to the health of your bite and teeth. At DMD Dental, we can help restore bone density with regenerative biologic techniques.
What are Bone Grafts?
Dental bone grafts are a surgical procedure that enhances bone density in the jaw. Lack of bone is often a product of decay and periodontitis, which allows pockets of bacteria in the gums to destroy the underlying bone. A bone graft procedure can provide the basis for further restorative work.
What are the Benefits of Bone Grafts?
Bone grafts are often recommended to fill in a socket after a tooth extraction, provide a foundation for dental implants, and repair dental trauma. Bone grafts act as a scaffold for your cells to rebuild healthier, denser bone, improving the overall health of your mouth by preserving necessary support for the adjacent teeth. Most importantly, Dr. Du Mond takes a minimally invasive approach, focusing on growing new bone tissue rather than taking it from elsewhere.
What Can I Expect From Bone Grafts?
Bone grafts are typically administered with a local anesthetic and sedation. Dr. Du Mond will gain access to the underlying bone and deposit specialized materials that will act as a “scaffold” for your body to grow new bone. She may also use platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), a serum rich in growth factors that is derived from your blood sample. This promotes healing, revascularization, and growth throughout the process.
The Bone Grafts Process and Beyond
Our team will provide detailed aftercare instructions to protect against infection. You will recover from your bone graft procedure within one to two weeks, but your body will continue to build new bone tissue for several months. Once you have sufficient bone tissue, you may proceed to the next step in your dental treatment, such as placing implants. Dr. Du Mond will check in regularly to assess the growth of new bone and ensure your results are progressing as planned.
